Students take part in sport conference
31 January 2012
On January 16, eight Treloar College students took part in a conference at Alton Maltings Centre run by Hampshire County Council and aimed at discussing the needs of disabled people in relation to sport activities.
The student group was accompanied by Anita Simpson SEN tutor at Treloar’s, Ali Lyons from World of Work, Treloar’s equality and diversity officer Erin Wills, and LSA and signer Fiona Law, and before Christmas, those taking part met up to discuss and prepare for the event.
The conference was led by Kaz White, the county council’s Recreational Activities Inclusion Officer (Disabled Children and Young People) and was specifically for people involved in the leisure industry.
More than 200 people attended, including delegates from sports centre, gyms, leisure outlets, Scout, Guides, theatres and outdoor activity centres.
Treloar’s students led two of the day’s workshops, which used discussion, role play and activities as a way of setting tasks for delegates in order to give them a better understanding of disability and accessibility in the leisure industry and the difficulties experienced by people with disabilities.
Feedback on the day and afterwards has been very positive, and the students themselves said they found the conference not only interesting but also enjoyable, with each of them contributing advice and opinions.
