Golfers rally round for Treloar's
9 March 2011
Twelve months of fundraising came to a fantastic culmination last week when Treloar’s received a mammoth cheque for the sum of £18,127.
This was the result of the efforts of Oak Park Golf Club in Crondall, whose Ladies and Men’s captains – Margaret Church and Brian Matthews - both chose Treloar’s as their charity for the year.
They made this decision after visiting Treloar’s and meeting the young students face-to-face.
It was during this first visit they realised just how important the correct wheelchair was for the young people and the life-changing effect an electric wheelchair could have on a student, thanks to the freedom of movement it allows.
This provided them with the main focus for the fundraising drive.
Last week the cheque was presented to Treloar’s Community Development Manager, Jon Colville, at a fun-packed evening of entertainment, which rounded off the joint captains’ year.
Games on the night included teams of four having three minutes to knock as many skittles down as possible as well as scoring on a traditional dartboard.
There were also older traditional games such as shove halfpenny and a Bagatelle, where the joint scores were added to the total.
Everyone paid a pound to enter and so many turned up there were two rounds to fit everyone in!
All of this was added to the charity total.
Brian said on the evening: “A high number of Oak Park members supporting this charity event has been typical of the type of support we have received all year.”
It was then Jon’s turn to speak, after being stunned with a cheque by Brian and Margaret for the staggering amount – which will have such a positive impact on young people at Treloar’s.
Jon thanked everyone at Oak Park for a terrific fundraising year, and in particular Margaret and Brian for choosing Treloar’s as their charity.
Margaret added: “It was not difficult to choose Treloar’s as our charity once we visited and met some of the lovely young people.”
