Record funds raised at Friends' plant sale

The Friends of Treloar’s 15th annual plant sale on May 12 was the most successful ever with an incredible £2,075.90 being taken on the day.

The weather was glorious and brought out gardeners looking to buy some new plants for their gardens for the summer.

There were also beautiful hanging baskets for sale, along with some vegetables and herbs in addition to the bedding plants.

Students spent some considerable time counting and recounting the money and everyone was delighted to discover that the proceeds from the Friends’ fundraising efforts (plants, cakes, refreshments, raffle etc) came to £1,035, and those from sales of the plants grown by Treloar’s horticulture students amounted to £1,040.90.

This was a fantastic effort by everyone involved – so a huge thank you goes out to the organisers, the students and the supporters. And a thank you also to Sean who worked tirelessly all morning on the till, which didn’t stop ringing!

Drink up from our jubilee mugs!

As the country prepares to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Treloar’s students have been busy creating special mementoes to mark the occasion.

The TEPS department invited entries for a ‘design a jubilee mug competition’, with the only criterion being that designs should celebrate Great Britain and its diverse culture.

Designs could be painted, drawn, photographed or produced using computer technology, and some excellent entries were received.

The competition winners were announced at Friday Live, namely David Clark and Dean Lindsay.

Congratulations go to both David and Dean who now have the honour of seeing their designs turned into mugs by the TEPS team.

Anyone wanting to order mugs can do so by contacting TEPS for an order form, which should be returned to room L6 or placed in the TEPS tray in the staffroom. Standard mugs cost £4 and porcelain ones cost £5.

Kings and queens at May Day celebration

Thanks to an indoor contingency plan, rain didn’t stop the fun for students, staff, family and friends at the Treloar’s May Day celebration on May 7.

It had been hoped to hold the event on the Piazza, but thanks to the wet weather, everything was moved inside. However, despite the relocation, everyone agreed it was a very enjoyable and successful day.

As an early tribute to the Queen’s diamond jubilee next month, this year’s May Day took on a Royal flavour with all kinds of activities, such as communal singing led by the Treloar’s staff choir, live music and games and stalls.

Among the entertainment was a fancy dress procession based on kings and queens. Entrants had taken a fairly liberal interpretation of this theme and the competition was won by Charlie, who was disguised as The King – better known as Elvis.

Andrew the Balloon Man also proved very popular with his fantastic balloon creations, which culminated in a finale, which saw him climbing inside a giant balloon.

There was also a special jubilee ceremony in the Treloar Hall organised by Jenny Judge, Mark Birch and Jocelyn Watkins. This included readings by Alex and Lucy before Charlie gave three cheers for Her Majesty and Jamie finished with “Long live the Queen”.

During the day, a flowering cherry tree was planted on the Piazza. This tree was chosen to represent a link between the old School site at Froyle, where there is a beautiful avenue of flowering cherry trees, and the new one at Holybourne. It is intended to hold a short tree blessing service once the fine weather is back with us.

Fundraising director and fancy dress judge Jon Colville said: “It was a fantastic day with Treloar’s at its best. The singing and the fun in the hall were just amazing.

I also really enjoyed judging the fancy dress, but it was a difficult task as the costumes really were excellent.

“I’d like to thank Jenny Judge and Pauline Tetlow for organising such a magnificent day – the kind of day which is so important for Treloar’s and means so much to me personally.”

Treloar's players excel at 2012 boccia test event

Excitement is building as the Paralympics approach and Treloar’s boccia players have just returned from London where they did exceptionally well in a pre-Paralympics test competition.

The London 2012 boccia test event took place over the weekend of May 5-7 at the Olympic Park. The main aim behind these events is to test the venues and vital areas of operation before the Games themselves, however, they also provide top quality, intnerational sporting competitions.

Five boccia medal events took place over the weekend with Belgium, Canada, Great Britain, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Portugal, Spain and Thailand all fielding teams.

First in the event line up was the individual competition, in which current student and Paralympics reserve Andrew Morgan lost in BC1 to former student David Smith, who went on to win the gold medal. Andrew finished overall in a very creditable seventh place.

In the BC2, recent visitor to Treloar’s Nigel Murray took the gold medal, while former student Dan Bentley, who ranks 15th in the world, played exceptionally well to finish fifth.

In the teams and pairs competitions, in the BC1/BC2 section, team GB1 containing David Smith and Dan Bentley, took the bronze medal, while team GB2 (which is not taking part in the Paralympics), superbly captained by Andrew Morgan, was fifth.

In the BC3 pairs competition, team GB2, which included former Treloar’s student Cecelia Turk, finished in fifth place, while the GB BC3 team of Jacob Thomas, who won the individual bronze medal, and Treloar’s student Jess Hunter took the gold medal, beating the Greek current world champions.

Treloar’s boccia coach Barry Bowden was delighted with the results. He said: “It was another great weekend for Treloar’s. And it was widely recognised by the GB staff in attendance that Jess was the star player in the pairs competition.”

Deaf Awareness Week

There are 45,000 deaf young people in the UK. Every deaf young person is different. Some speak, some sign and some use both speaking and signing. But they all face the same thing everyday: communicating with other people. Sometimes it goes well, but sometimes it is difficult because people do not know what to do.

Why not do ONE of the following to become more deaf aware?

1. How are you? Learn some signs to say how you are feeling: http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-express-feelings-in-british-sign-language

2. Try the fingerspelling tool to learn how to sign your name! http://www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk/s2s/fingerspelling.htm

3. Spread the Sign! Learn how to sign in different languages. Some signs like "one" are the same in lots of different countries. Other signs, like "dog" are very different. Try out some words for yourself! http://www.spreadthesign.com/gb/

4. Watch Ed Sheeran's amazing sing sign video.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXvzzTICvJs

5. Read Jess' Deaf Awareness piece (attached) to learn tips from a student to help someone with a hearing impairment

6. There are lots of ways to chat. Watch this short film. How do you chat with your friends and family? http://youngpeople.ndcsbuzz.org.uk/looksmilechat/films/ref:F4F9AAFDA4157B/title:There+are+lots+of+ways+to+chat
