Independence Training at Treloar's College
Independent Living Skills – the skills you need to move on
College is about much more than just getting formal qualifications – that’s what makes us different. We are also interested in helping you prepare for the future, which is what our Independent Living Skills (ILS) curriculum is all about.
Independence isn’t just about achieving a task, it’s about making choices for yourself and telling support workers what you need.
Our ILS programme offers something for everyone, and involves staff from across the College working together to help you develop the skills that are important to you.
It covers independence training, personal development, advocacy, citizenship, and careers education, and you can choose to work on a whole range of things including:
- Community, mobility and transport skills
- Personal care skills, eating and drinking, and maintaining equipment
- Communication, social and interpersonal skills
- Domestic skills, health, hygiene and safety
- Your future plans
Former students tell us that learning to be independent can be the hardest lesson of all to learn, and the most valuable.
