Student Council

Democracy at work – across the School

If students have any issues – for example, about how things are run at the School – if they want, they can raise them with our School Council.

Made up of an elected representative from every class,Student Elections plus our Head Boy and Head Girl, the Council meets every half term, to discuss any issues. Representatives ask their class mates if they have anything they want to raise during form periods. And if any issues need student consideration – a national poll or views about changes to facilities, for example – this debate is organised through the Council.

The Council is co-ordinated by our PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) tutor. The Headteacher attends the meetings, too – and if there are issues that need further investigation, he ensures this is done, and brings the outcome back to the next meeting.

Head Boy and Head Girl

We re-introduced the concept of Head Boy and Head Girl in 2003, at the request of students and our school management committee. Students in Years 9 and 10 can put themselves forward for election by the whole school during the summer term. A Deputy for each post is chosen at the same time.

The role is another channel of student communication into the Headteacher's office, and also a civic role. The Head Girl and Boy often help with welcoming visitors and with presentations. Posters and manifesto meetings are held, after exams are over, and the Chairman of the School governing body acts as returning officer on Election Day.

Recent manifestos have ranged from ‘I will represent your views’, to ‘Vote for me, I’m cool!’. And we are fortunate to have always had a good turnout for the poll. The successful candidates in recent years have represented their fellow students and the School with considerable aplomb.
