Key Stages 3 and 4
Key Stage 3
For students from the age of 11 to 15 we offer:
The full National Curriculum
A carefully planned timetable which allows time for everyone to get from place to place and complete their care routines- Teachers experienced in special educational needs as well as their own specialist subjects
- Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), who enhance the learning experience of each student without encouraging dependency.
- Therapists who work with the students individually and alongside classroom staff to improve their access to learning. (This may be through improving physical positioning, providing comfortable seating, supporting the use of low tech and high tech communication systems or making sure that a student can use their PC.)
- A PC for every student - with bespoke access.
- An Assistive Technology Department to support all technology and solve problems with wheelchairs, voice output machines and PCs.
“There is a seamless collaboration between the teaching and non teaching staff, which consolidates learning and enables achievement to be outstanding” (Ofsted 2009)
Key Stage 4
From the ages of 14 to 16 our students make choices about some of the subjects they want to continue studying. LSA and therapeutic support continues, with more input to help them prepare for the next stage of their lives.
Students plan and organise visits and trips to support their education. They are given increased opportunities to meet successful, disabled adults and learn about possibilities for the future. Staff, students and parents all work together on transition plans to support their future aspirations.
All students work towards nationally recognised qualifications, including, GCSEs, Entry Level Qualifications, ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network), NSP (National Skills Profile), and City and Guilds. Many of these are assessed through coursework, and we can also apply for special arrangements from the awarding bodies, so that our students are not disadvantaged in their exams because of their physical problems.
Special arrangements can include: extra time; rest periods; using a computer; a scribe; a reader; enlarged and modified papers.
More details on the subjects we offer can be found in the Curriculum section.
