At Treloar’s, your child will be in safe hands

disabled education at Treloar's schoolWe cater for all aspects of our pupils’ wellbeing. Our strength lies in our holistic, multi-disciplinary approach, which encompasses education, residential and pastoral care, therapy, medical support and independence training.

Treloar’s is now a Specialist Special School (in the Physical and Sensory strand) which identifies and strengthens our holistic emphasis.

An individual approach from the start

When a student joins us, we place great emphasis on getting to know their individual needs – so we can put together the right package of learning support, and involve the most appropriate staff in their care and education from the very start.

Our experienced multi-disciplinary teams adopt a child-centered approach to identify the requirements of individuals.  We modify elements of the National Curriculum in cases where it would be inaccesible as it stands.  Our students academic attainment ranges from P Levels through to GCSEs, with a significant proportion going on to Further and Higher Education, either directly or via our Pathway to F.E programme.

We develop an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) for every student. This is reviewed each term by our staff, and once a year at a formal Annual Review. Parents, their child, Local Authority representatives and, where appropriate, a Connexions Personal Adviser are invited to attend.

Teaching and Learning are personalised. The carefully tailored, excellent provision meets the individual needs of all students.”  (Ofsted 2009)

Integrated Curriculum Classes

To help all our students to reach their full potential we offer an integrated curriculum in some classes. This involves therapists and teachers working with students in the classroom to optimise their learning and comfort.

An extra helping hand can make all the difference

Making education accessible and enjoyable for every student is at the heart of what we do at Treloar’s – and our Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) play a crucial part in this.

LSAs support students, either on their own or in groups, to ensure they get the most out of each lesson – but without ‘doing the work’ for them!

They can help in the following ways:

  • Scribing for a student who finds it difficult to write in class or during exams
  • Providing a pair of hands that students can direct in practical subjects, such as science experiments
  • Listening to students read or helping them work on a computer

Providing skilled Learning Support Assistants is one of the things that sets Treloar’s apart from a mainstream school. We have a high staff to student ratio, but we avoid constant one-to-one support unless absolutely necessary. Our ultimate aim is to maximise our students’ independence and minimise their dependency.

Our aim is to enable students; to equip them with the confidence, as well as the skills to achieve – without encouraging dependency.
