Planning for the future

Your Future

Preparing to leave Treloar’s

planning for future for disabled students

What do you want to do when you leave college? It may seem a long way off, but it’s something we’ll start thinking about with you, almost as soon as you arrive. In fact, you’ll be working towards moving on, pretty much the whole time you’re with us.

After Treloar’s, you may decide you want to:

  • Investigate employment opportunities, volunteering, self employment or apprenticeships
  • Carry on with your education in a mainstream college
  • Go on to higher education
  • Move to a residential setting to concentrate on developing more life skills and independence

Our futures team will help you think about what you want to do when you leave in so many ways:

  • We can liaise with staff, social services, the Connexions Service and various contacts in the area you’re moving to, to develop a transition plan that’s practical and realistic
  • We can put you in touch with up-to-date information, computer programmes and details of useful websites on jobs, training, work-related learning, independent living, further and higher education, and residential opportunities
  • We run a variety of activities and workshops for leavers

Every February, on the Thursday before half term, we stage our Future Fest. This event brings together over 40 organisations from across the south east who may be part of your future. We have exhibitors from higher and further education, the Benefits Office for advice on benefits and work, residential placements, independent living advice, volunteering and even dogs who can sort your washing for you!

Your parents and social workers - as well as your connexions personal adviser - will also be invited to help you look round and start planning your future – handy if you have more than one option to consider.

When you leave, you will have your Leavers Pack to help you on your journey. This includes detailed reports from all the therapists who have come to know you well during your time with us. You will also have a list of all the exams you have passed and all the equipment you need to take you comfortably into the next stage of life – be that at University, the work place or moving into your own place.

Your pack includes much more – all kinds of information on housing, benefits, medical services and many good websites where you can search for more information to help you in your future.

It also contains details of all the things you have achieved and the progress you made during your time at Treloar’s. It will help you move into the next part of your life and your future with confidence!

We want you to feel secure about planning your future during your time with us and to feel confident that you can take that next step with the knowledge that you are well prepared for your choice of future activity.

When you leave us, we won’t leave you!

Our Information Adviser will contact you after leaving to make sure your plans have gone smoothly, offer advice and point you in the right direction if you need help following a different path.

For those of you who live in North West Surrey, or in the Lewisham area of London, don’t forget to visit our Moving On page to see how Treloar's can give you more support as you start your own life.
