Treloar's students excel at boccia qualifier
2 February 2012
Woking Leisure Centre hosted the annual Boccia England South East Regional Boccia championships over the weekend of the 28th and 29th January 2012.
This competition is one of a series of qualifying events for the Boccia England National Boccia Championships in Sheffield in May.
The two day event had 48 competitors between the four classifications, with Treloar students past and present numbering 25. The breakdown of this being 12 current School students, four current College students and nine former students.
Over the course of the weekend, the Treloar's competitors played a total of 86 matches, winning 50.
Of the 18 athletes that qualified for the Nationals in May, eight had Treloar's connections, with four of those being current Treloar's students.
The current student qualifiers were:
Andrew Morgan (BC1) 1st place.
James Clowes (BC2) 2nd place.
Tia Ruel (BC1) 3rd place.
Habib Cham (BC3) 4th place.
The former student qualifiers were:
Jaco Roux (BC2) 1st place.
Liam Beresford (BC3) 1st place.
Ce Turk (BC3) 2nd place.
Emma Harris (BC3) 5th place.
For many of the students, it was their first time at a competitive event. Special mention should be made of William Arnott and Jasper MacCall.
William finished in fourth place in the BC4 classification and was very unlucky to miss out on qualification for the Nationals.
Jasper missed out on a place in the BC1 semi finals, and therefore a chance at qualifying on points scored. He won the same number of matches as Matthew Flackett, the highest placed runner up in the pool stages. Their points difference was identical, but unfortunately for Jasper, who had beaten Matthew 6 – 1 in the pool stages, Matthew had scored three points more than Jasper.
As ever thanks must go to the staff who supported the students: Kim Smith, who organised everything, Dionne DeBotte, Amy Barnes, Matt Wettone and Chris Harding.
The students were accompanied at the competition by Treloar's boccia coach Barry Bowden.
