Sport at Treloar's
Creating a sense of achievement
Before coming to Treloar’s, many of our students were denied access to sports. Lack of physical activity is a great source of frustration that makes them feel isolated and may lead to behavioural difficulties.
Here everyone has the opportunity to participate in sport - no matter how severe their disabilities. This gives a huge boost to their confidence, self-esteem and physical wellbeing. We provide specialist equipment, staff and opportunities to help our students to find a sport to suit them. Over the years we have seen the positive changes brought about by sporting participation.
“Outside Treloar’s you don’t get told about your ability, you just get told about your disability. Here you are encouraged to be the best that you can be. It is like a really big dream come true.”
Ali Lalani, former Treloar student and National Boccia Player
At Treloar’s we offer a wide range of sporting activities including archery, athletics, boccia, dance, horse-riding, rounders, sailing, swimming, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair football and zone hockey.
“We do not exclude any student from PE. All are given the opportunity to progress at their own pace and to fully achieve their potential.”
Sandra King, School PE & sport coordinator
The Campbell Sports Fund gives grants to help pay for equipment, training and facilities, travel and hotel accommodation to attend national as well as international sporting competitions. It also ensures that we can buy the right equipment and offer the best training.
This year Treloar’s needs to raise:
£1,000 for older students to take part in a water-ski week
£1,200 for a swimming pool changing bed
£5,000 for wheelchair bumpers to enable students to play football
£9,000 to attend national and international competitions
£12,808 for a new throwing area for discus, javelin and shot-put
£19,176 for a new sports shelter for spectators and to store equipment
£31,725 for lighting, landscaping and security at our College sports arena
£71,223 for a new hard surface court for wheelchair hockey, tennis and basketball
