Politics comes to Treloar's

Treloar’s was very pleased to welcome two political figureheads to its Holybourne campus last week.

Maria Miller MP, who represents the Basingstoke constituency and is also Minister for Disabled People, and Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire, were treated to a tour of the new site during their visit on Thursday 22 September.

Led by Chairman of Governors, Michael Del Mar, Chief Executive, Tony Reid and Principal, Amanda Quincey, Ms Miller and Mr Hinds learned about the exciting developments that have taken place as a result of the Vision Treloar’s project – a multi-million pound build project which secures the future for Treloar’s and ensures it can continue to carry on providing education, care and therapy for more than 200 disabled young people from the UK and overseas.

During the tour the members of parliament were shown the public-facing Holybourne hub, the Jowett Centre, which houses the new shop, café and exhibition space on Treloar’s campus. Moving on to the Trailblazer, Ms Miller and Mr Hinds heard how Treloar’s shares its expertise with the wider community and delivers multi-disciplinary assessments to disabled people across the region, as well as the solutions Treloar’s assistive technologists can offer to allow them to live more independently.

The visitors then had the opportunity to see the new classrooms in the learning zone and the creative arts centre in the new build as well as the hydrotherapy pool, before popping into the dining room to chat with some students who were enjoying a spot of lunch!

Ms Miller praised the work of Treloar’s, saying: “I was very pleased to visit the new Treloar’s campus and hear about the fantastic work Treloar’s is doing to help disabled young people reach their potential.”

She added: “I was also really interested to hear about the work placements that the students undertake, the independent living skills programme and the contact between Treloar’s and the local community. All of this is so important in helping the young people to plan for the future.”

Treloar Trust Chief Executive, Tony Reid, said: “These visits are extremely important as they spread the message of the valuable work that Treloar’s provides for its students and the wider community.”

Both have already shown their commitment to the disability sector and by visiting Treloar’s we can demonstrate at first hand how we are evolving and embracing new technology to ensure Treloar’s can provide the best possible education and care for our young disabled students.”
