Treloar's staff make it in Mexico
5 December 2011
Two Treloar’s staff who travelled to a Mexican institute for disabled children have spoken of their experience.
Due to their level of expertise, which the young disabled people at Treloar’s benefit from, Domestic Independence tutor, Flossie Bennett, and Visual Impairment Advisor, Pretty Garrett, were invited to Monterray in Mexico to train teachers, therapists and teaching assistants at the Institute Neuvo Amanecer.
They were invited to attend the institute by director Dr Fabiola, who had previously visited Treloar’s. Fundraising was carried out by MeDict and a children’s rehabilitation centre in order for Flossie and Pretty to make the trip during October half-term.
While Pretty took eye charts, simulation spectacles for staff to wear to give them an idea of what it’s like to have a visual impairment, and magnifiers, Flossie took plates, knives, and a selection of specialist cutlery and kitchen equipment which was donated to the institute, who look after children as young as two years old.
Once in Mexico Flossie and Pretty gave food workshops and visual assessments respectively, and Pretty went to the local hospital to develop links between the hospital and the institute.
Pretty said: “We have come back with so many great memories and we want to continue to help the institute.”
