Swimming Squad successes

20-Oct-2008 - [College]

swim squadWhat an event! The Treloar Swim Squad was in action for the first time this year and came home laden with honours! The Squad was competing at the annual gala organised by Rushmoor Mallards Swimming Club held at the Aldershot Pool. We had a Squad of 9 swimmers; 4 from college and 5 from school.

Everyone swum well inspired no doubt by the success of our national Paralympic Squad in Beijing! Being just a few weeks into the term, the competition called upon last year’s training and just a few weeks fitness to produce their best performances.

The college swimmers have swum now in a number of competitions and it is increasingly difficult for them to better their personal times. However, Sonny New achieved a new PB in his Individual Medley event, winning 2 silver and 1 bronze medals overall. Anna Pakenham improved her 50m freestyle event and won 1 gold and 3 silver medals. Ellie Sewell also improved in her 25m backstroke and won 2 silver and 1 bronze. Luis Coward swum very well and won 2 gold medals, breaking his own records in both events.

In the individual points competition the Squad did very well. Anna Pakenham came runner up in the Ladies and Luis Coward won the Endeavour Trophy for his exceptional achievement.

In the Team Competition, the Squad waited with baited breath as the results were given in reverse order. Out of 12 teams, our name was not coming up as the totals were given; then the result came – we were tied first with the Sussex Squids, a team much more used to winning the Trophy than us! The applause and cheers were deafening - we had won!

The Treloar Swim Squad had never won it before despite having been at this competition for quite a few years. This was a fantastic achievement by our swimmers. Anna Pakenham received the cup on the team’s behalf. The Squad should be proud of their achievement, the result of their hard work and training.
