Art Lecture Quiz – winners announced
January 21, 2021
In the absence of the Annual Treloar Art Lecture this year The Treloar Art Lecture Committee organized a Christmas Quiz to keep its loyal followers entertained and amused. Thank you very much to everyone who took part – we had so many enthusiastic entries as well as generous donations. In total the Committee raised over than £700.
There was a tiebreaker question to the quiz which asked all our entrants to tell us in no more than 25 words which was their favourite painting. Here are some of the answers, and links so you can discover more about each painting:
Self-portrait by Louise Jopling: ‘A beautiful artist painting herself with such wonderful confidence and which, unlike my second favourite, Boticelli’s Primavera, would fit nicely on my living room wall.’ Jeff
The Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele by Jan van Eyck: ‘Anyone who can paint a fold in a carpet (really look closely), rich material and fine general detail is incredible. It’s an absolute masterpiece.’ Penny
Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez: ‘The vibrant detailed snapshot of artists, subjects and onlookers in deep perspective encourages further scrutiny of this royal family gathering.’ John
Santa Trinita Maesta by Cimabue: ‘I love this painting as it best represents the leap from Byzantine style to the beginning of the Renaissance.’ Andrea
Whistlejacket by George Stubbs: ‘I was impressed by this as a pony-mad schoolgirl – such a beautiful Arab horse: exquisite!’ Susie
La Primavera by Sandro Botticelli: ‘I hope Spring 2021 is as colourful and meaningful as this wonderful painting!’ Caroline
Tom Yendell, former Treloar student, Treloar Patron and member of the MFPA (Mouth and Foot Painting Artists) chose the winning entry – Caroline from Hampshire was the winner and Jeff from Stoke on Trent the runner-up. Congratulations to everyone who took part!
