Treloar School & College / Mindful Employer

Mindful Employer

Treloar’s has signed up to the Mindful Employer Charter for employers who are positive about mental health. That’s a commitment to working towards improving the workplace.

As an employer we recognise that:

  • People who have mental health issues may have experiences discrimination in recruitment and selection procedures. This may discourage them from seeking employment.
  • Whilst some people will acknowledge their experience of mental health issues in a frank and open way, others fear that stigma will jeopardise their chances of getting a job.
  • Given appropriate support, the vast majority of people who have experiences mental ill health continue to work successfully as do many with on-going issues.

As an employer we aim to:

  • Show a positive and enabling attitude to employees and job applicants with mental health issues. This will include positive statements in local recruitment literature.
  • Ensure that all staff involved in recruitment and selection are briefed on mental health issues and The Equality Act 2010, and given appropriate interview skills.
  • Make it clear in any recruitment or occupational health check that people who have experienced mental health issues will not be discriminated against and that disclosure of a mental health problem will enable both employee and employer to assess and provide the right level of support or adjustment.
  • Not make assumptions that a person with a mental health problem will be more vulnerable to workplace stress or take more time off than any other employee or job applicant.
  • Provide non-judgmental and proactive support to individual staff who experience mental health issues.
  • Ensure all line manager have information and training about managing mental health in the workplace.

Mental Health Champions

Our mental health initiative at Treloar’s launched on World Mental Health Day 2017 and we have successfully recruited over 20 staff volunteer Mental Health Champions.

This role of a Mental Health Champion in the workplace is to be a point of contact for an employee who is experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress. This interaction could range from having an initial conversation through supporting the person to get appropriate help. Mental Health Champions are also valuable in providing early intervention help for someone who may be developing a mental health issue.

We are committed to creating a culture at Treloar’s where everyone feels able to talk, be listened to and to access the support they need.

Free Counselling Line

All Treloar employees have 24/7 access to a counselling line provided by our independent health plan scheme. You can call as a one off, as many times as you need, arrange a series of sessions with the same counsellor or even get up to 6 face-to-face session.
