English writer Dame Jacqueline Wilson, well known for her vast and diverse work in children’s literature, visited Treloar’s today as the finale of the annual Six Book Challenge, an annual competition run by The Reading Agency to encourage people to read.
After a tour of the campus, Dame Jacqueline spoke about the over 100 books she has written, read to students and staff from one of her books and then picked the winners of the Six Book Challenge. The visit ended with a large queue of students wanting to have books and posters signed.
Karen Sanderson, Fundraising and Relationship Support Officer at Treloar’s, was delighted with the welcome Dame Jacqueline received: “We were thrilled when Dame Jacqueline agreed to come to Treloar’s and be part of our Six Book Challenge celebrations but, nothing could prepare us for her lovely warm, friendly personality and obvious instant engagement with our students - they loved her. We were also extremely lucky as Dame Jacqueline offered to read an extract from her new book ‘Katy’ to our students. Katy’s life changes in a dramatic and unexpected way after a serious accident. A book a lot of our students will be able to relate to.”
