This is Sara and Fiona, they are nurses who work on Chivers and Brewer residential houses. They were kind enough to answer some questions about being a nurse at Treloar’s.
What is your favorite part about being a nurse?
Sara: My favourite part of being a nurse is helping people and helping them to help themselves by educating them to make better, more informed choices. It is important to me to be able to make sure people are happy and healthy.
Fiona: My favourite part of being a nurse is making a difference in people’s lives every day. Whether it’s helping someone feel better, supporting them through a difficult moment, or just being there to listen, it’s a privilege to care for others and be part of their journey.
Why do you think the nurses and the health centre at Treloar’s are important?
Sara: I think it’s important for students to have access to nurses and doctors should they need them, to be able to be assessed and reassured or referred to other professionals should they need to be.
Fiona: The nurses and Health Centre at Treloar’s play a very important role in keeping students healthy, safe, and supported. We’re here to help with medical needs, offer advice, and make sure students feel as comfortable and independent as possible. We also work closely with families and staff to provide the best care for every individual.
What is so special about working at Treloar’s?
Sara: The people! The students are amazing and show so much resilience – they blow me away every day, the staff are so hard working looking after the students and advocating for them and giving them a voice when they may not otherwise be heard. The nursing team is very supportive and lovely to be a part of.
Fiona: Treloar’s is a very special place because of the amazing students. Everyone here is unique, and we celebrate those differences. The teamwork, the support, and the chance to be part of such an inspiring community make Treloar’s a truly rewarding place to work.
Why should people consider nursing as a job?
Sara: I think nursing is a hard job, but very rewarding, it is certainly not a career for people to choose if they want to earn a lot of money, but a career to choose if you want to make a difference in someone’s life – sometimes small, sometimes big.
Fiona: Nursing is wonderful career because it allows you to help people in so many different ways. It’s not always easy, but it’s meaningful, varied, and full of opportunities to learn and grow. If you enjoy caring for others, solving problems, and working as part of a team, nursing could be a great fit.
