Equality, diversity and inclusion

Treloar’s is committed to eliminating discrimination and celebrates equality and diversity among our students and our workforce. We believe in the uniqueness and value of each individual and provide opportunities for people of all abilities to achieve their potential.

We celebrate diversity amongst our students, staff and visitors, and recognise the contribution that individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences can make to the life of Treloar’s.

Treloar’s is an equal opportunities employer. The aim of our recruitment policy is to ensure that no job applicant receives less favourable treatment as a consequence of their age, disability, sex gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or philosophical belief, or sexual orientation, responsibility for dependants, employment status, trade union membership or social and economic status. Selection criteria and procedures are intended to ensure that individuals are selected, promoted and in all other ways treated on the basis of their relevant merits and abilities.

General Equality Duty

Treloar’s values have been set in recognition of the general equality duty. We are committed to the following objectives, in order to:

  • put an end to unlawful behaviour that is banned by the Equality Act 2010, including discrimination, harassment and victimisation
  • advance equal opportunities between people who have a protected characteristic and those who do not. For Treloar’s this means:
    • removing or reducing the disadvantage that people with protected characteristics face
    • taking steps to meet the specific needs of people with protected characteristics
    • encouraging people with protected characteristic to participate fully in all activities, especially where they are underrepresented
  • foster good relations between people who have a protected characteristic and those who do not. For Treloar’s this means:
    • we are taking action to reduce prejudice and increase understanding between different groups of people.

Our Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) priorities for 2025/2026, linked to the Strategic Plan EDI Objectives

1, Co-develop the revised School and College  PHRSE curriculum with input from students to ensure accessibility and relevance.

2, Increase our student recruitment of young people from socially deprived backgrounds and complex living environments.  Initially, we will better understand/collate the 2025/26 data, to then set measurable targets for improvements

  • Post code demographics
  • Accessing Bursaries
  • Fostered/Adopted
  • Children subject to a child protection plan
  • Living in Care Homes
  • Social Housing
  • Parents/carers with additional needs e.g. physical or learning disabilities, and families where English is not their first language
  • Do they have support in the family home from professional carers/access to respite provision

3, Provide targeted leadership training for staff from diverse backgrounds. In year one, we will assess the need:

  • Understand the talent management pool – via cleansing diversity monitoring data
  • Conduct focus groups to understand the leadership development needs of staff from diverse backgrounds, using Staff Consultation Forum
  • Identify barriers to leadership advancement

4, To ensure Treloar’s environment and information is as accessible to students, staff, families and visitors. Implement regular Accessibility Assessments of the site/environment, and the information we provide, resulting in recommendations and improvement actions that constantly develop our accessibility for all.

  • Through the self-assessment of the accessible information standards, we will identify ways to make information more accessible for our community of stakeholders
  • A new site accessibility audit to be completed, with a focus on sensory impairment

5, Engagement with local businesses and community groups to create greater awareness of physical disabilities and/or the benefits of recruiting a physically disabled employee:

  • Attendees at the Employer engagement event
  • Number of organisations that have received awareness presentations from Treloar’s on physical disability

Promotion of British values

At Treloar’s, we are dedicated to promoting values which ensure that our students develop a strong sense of social and moral responsibility. We prepare our students for life in modern Britain by developing an understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and acceptance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

These values underpin the work we do and are promoted at various times throughout the academic year, extending beyond the classroom with a wide range of visits and enrichment experiences.

Treloar’s Leaders and Governors are committed and responsible for providing a curriculum which is broad and balanced and complies with statutory requirements. Together we uphold what is great about Britain and also to challenge what is bad. We reject intolerance and forms of radicalisation (of any kind: religious, nationalist, political, racial, and sexual). We embrace our responsibilities to one another and to the rules that govern the life of our society. We seek to engage with the world around us, and to shape it into an equal society for everyone.
