Since 2014, Treloar's has been welcoming international volunteers who join Treloar School and College and their various departments. Thanks to the partnership with International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE), Treloar's is able to offer work experience and support volunteers from all walks of life, but usually, the candidates are aged between 18 and mid-twenties and may well be a school/college leaver taking a gap year. A high number of volunteers also come to Treloar's after finishing college or university before embarking on a career.
On 14 July, we said ‘Thank you’ to our overseas volunteers, Betsy, Valentina, Grace, Lily and Anne, who have spent a year working at Treloar’s. Betsy was assigned to the Physiotherapy Team, with the others each assigned to a different classroom for the year.
We asked them about their best moments and what they have learnt during their time at Treloar’s:
"Creating a bond with students, and learning to communicate with students who are non-verbal."
"I have learnt lots of new things, gained confidence around people and learnt about a new culture."
"Watching the students grow over the year."
"I love coming to work, if the students are happy, it makes your day."
Anna is going back to Germany to start university and has even changed her course to a teaching degree, inspired by her time at Treloar’s.
ICYE volunteers do more than just assist—they live, learn, and grow within Treloar’s community, bringing fresh perspectives and energy that deeply benefit the classroom environment.
We are so grateful to our volunteers who have made such an impact in the classroom and we wish them well in their future studies.
