October is AAC Awareness Month—a time to shine a spotlight on the transformative power of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). For individuals with complex communication needs, AAC is more than just technology—it’s a vital lifeline that empowers them to communicate, connect and engage with the world around them.
AAC encompasses a wide range of communication methods, tools and strategies that support or replace spoken language. This can include everything from signing and gestures, low-tech letter or picture/symbol boards and books to high-tech communication devices that use sophisticated computer technologies. At its core, AAC is about giving everyone a voice so they can be heard and included.
A lifeline for many Treloar’s students
At Treloar's, almost two thirds of students are non-verbal or require AAC to support their communication. Our team of professionals, including speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and assistive technologists, work together to find the best solutions that meet the individual communication needs of each student.
Beyond communication: Tools for learning, engagement and inclusion
For students at Treloar School and College, AAC serves a purpose that aims to go far beyond communicating basic wants and needs. These tools enable young people to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas—and to do so with independence and confidence.
AAC fosters active participation in all aspects of school and college life. In the classroom, students use their AAC systems to answer questions, join discussions and engage with peers. This level of engagement is critical—not only for academic achievement but also for building self-esteem and social connections.
Creating an inclusive and supportive environment where AAC is seamlessly integrated into the educational experience can have a life-changing impact. Students who are empowered to communicate are better able to advocate for themselves, form relationships and take on leadership roles in their own learning.
