Treloar’s celebrates partnership with HSDC Alton College with new film

"This is true inclusion in every sense."

Ben Bastin, Head of Treloar College describes the collaborative relationship with local further education college, HSDC Alton College.

This unique partnership allows Treloar's students to access their education alongside their non-disabled peers whilst having their therapeutic and care needs met by the team at Treloar’s. This provision is exceptional in ensuring students have equity of access despite their physical needs.

In our new film launched today, you’ll meet past and present students who have benefitted from this partnership. They share their experiences and show how this collaboration has enabled them to succeed and achieve more than they thought possible.

We meet Evie, who has a rare genetic disorder. Evie’s mum says:

‘I didn’t envisage Evie having an independent future. Evie’s journey since she joined Treloar's has been so much bigger than I thought it would be. From day one of her joining the college, it’s almost indescribable how much she’s grown in confidence’.

Evie explains how she is thriving at college:

‘I really enjoy it because I’ve made so many friends. I enjoy the mainstream environment and the independence it provides. I never thought I would have this opportunity, but I love it.’

Many students on this pathway aspire to go on to higher education and in addition to their qualifications, their transition and multi-disciplinary team will work with them to develop their independence skills to achieve their future aims.

'This is a clear example of specialist and mainstream collaboration which is transformative for our young people. We are incredibly proud of the achievement this programme has enabled our young people to secure and we know that in any other environment this would not have been possible. This is true inclusion in every sense.'

Ben Bastin, Head of Treloar College

HSDC Alton College provide access to the full range of qualifications while a team of dedicated specialist learning support assistants provide any personal care required to enable Treloar’s students to access their education alongside their peers.

‘The students are fully integrated in their time here at the college’.

Ashley Grute, Assistant Principal for Curriculum, Alton College

We’re proud of our success in supporting students to achieve their aims. In recent years former students have progressed to the University of Creative Arts, the University of Bristol, Southampton Solent, Bath Spa, Bournemouth University and Royal Holloway London.

At Treloar’s, our ethos is to support our students to give them all the skills they need to live as independently as they possibly can in the next stage of their lives.
