Reflecting on the experience, Sally said:
“I was really pleased to be able to attend this conference, and showcase what our medicines management team do every day”.
Sally Nissen, Head of Healthcare and Nursing, was pleased to present at the European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD) Conference 2026 in Ireland, last week. The EACD is an international forum bringing together over 1200 clinicians, researchers, and families as service users, dedicated to improving outcomes for children and young people with disabilities.
The 3-day conference provided a valuable opportunity to hear about cutting edge research, share learning, connect with international colleagues, and contribute to wider discussions on advancing the support of children and families in childhood disability services.
Sally’s presentation of work, co-authored with Claire McManus (pharmacy technician), showcased a quality improvement initiative on the development and implementation of a structured seven-step framework for transcribing medicines for administration. Transcribing is ‘the copying of prescribed medicine details to enable administration.’
While transcribing is often essential in out-of-hospital environments, there is limited formal guidance - prompting the creation of a practical, person-centred approach. Treloar’s transcribe over 300,000 doses of prescribed medicines for administration, each year, and over a four-year period, the framework was associated with a reduction in medicine errors reaching students, alongside high satisfaction levels reported by both students and families.
