Father and son go the extra mile for Treloar’s in 22-mile walking challenge

Hangers Way

A local father and son have gone the extra mile for Treloar’s, walking more than 22 miles across Hampshire and turning a personal adventure into an opportunity to make a difference to young people’s lives.

Jim Shields and his son Nathan recently completed the Hangers Way, walking from Alton to Queen Elizabeth Country Park in just over nine hours. The pair took on the challenge together, enjoying the full route through the Hampshire countryside before reaching their destination.

Originally planned as a personal challenge, the walk took on a new purpose when Jim and Nathan decided shortly before setting off to use it to raise money for Treloar’s.

As members of the local community, they regularly see Treloar’s out and about in the area, including at Alton FC home matches. When they decided to turn their adventure into a fundraising challenge, supporting the charity felt like a natural choice.

“It just felt like a worthwhile organisation to support when we decided, fairly spontaneously, to turn our walk into a fundraising challenge.” - Jim Shields

The pair set themselves a fundraising target of £500, with donations helping Treloar’s provide specialist education, care and therapy for physically disabled children and young people.

Every donation helps create opportunities for young people to develop their independence, build confidence and discover what they can achieve. This support helps them pursue their ambitions, overcome barriers and work towards a future shaped by their own hopes and aspirations.

By turning a walk they had planned for themselves into a way to give back, Jim and Nathan have shown how even a spontaneous decision can make a meaningful difference. Their challenge is a reminder that supporting a cause doesn't have to involve a huge event or months of preparation; sometimes, it starts with simply deciding to do something good for others.

Treloar’s is incredibly grateful to Jim and Nathan for choosing to support the charity. Their generosity will help Treloar’s continue creating opportunities for young people to thrive, grow in confidence and reach their full potential. Jim hopes to take on more challenges in the future and continue fundraising for Treloar’s.
