Volunteering FAQs

How do I apply?

Step 1: Review the current opportunities for a role that suits your skills and interests.
Step 2: Complete an Application Form.
Step 3: Treloar’s will contact you if a suitable role is available.
Step 4: Take part in an informal discussion at Treloar’s with the Volunteers Co-ordinator and/or Head of Department of your interest. This visit will give you the opportunity to see the site, meet our staff and ask questions.
Step 5: By mutual agreement a decision will be made for you to undertake the volunteering role.
Step 6: At this stage, we will ask you to complete a DBS form. Please note there is no cost to you when applying for a DBS check. You will not be able to start until the DBS Certificate has been viewed by an appropriate member of staff (this can take up to 8 weeks). You will also need to provide proof of identity and relevant references. However, during the waiting period you may be able to undertake the required training.
Step 7: You will complete an induction programme including required training and receive appropriate information prior to commencing.

It will take approximately one to two months from the time you submit an application to beginning your voluntary helper role. Upon beginning your role, you will be provided with the necessary support from the Volunteer Co-ordinator and/or supervisor. Always remember that if you have any questions, just ask!

What is volunteering?

Volunteering is unpaid activity with a charity or not-for-profit organisation that makes a difference to the wider community. Volunteering at Treloar’s involves doing something that enhances and improves the lives of the children and young people who are being educated within our School or College. There are many opportunities for volunteering within the Treloar’s from a few hours at an event to volunteering on a regular/longer-term basis.

Who can volunteer?

We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, cultures, faiths, and abilities. You must be 16 years of age to volunteer with Treloar’s and a number of roles require a minimum age of 18 years. All volunteers must undergo an informal interview and required recruitment checks.

Where will I be based?

Most of our voluntary helper roles will be based on-site in Holybourne, Alton. Event Helpers may also support activities in the Hampshire area. Collectors and fundraisers are located throughout the UK.

What type of role can I volunteer to do?

We have many types of voluntary helper roles including supporting in our classrooms, residential houses, and in other departments . Some roles involve supporting students in activities including sport, arts & crafts, reading and video games. We also offer administrative roles and helper roles that do not have any direct contact with our students.

Do you offer training to volunteers?

Whatever role you decide to take up with Treloar’s, you will be given the help and support you need. You will be completing and induction program and will be trained in your specific voluntary helper role. If you have any questions along the way, it is important that you always ask a staff member or the Volunteer Co-ordinator.

How much time do I have to give?

The voluntary helper roles vary from a few hours a week to one specific event and the role description outlines the desired time commitment.

What skills do I need to volunteer?

We have a variety of voluntary helper roles that require different skills and experience. The most important things are energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to try new activities and learn.

Will I have to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service Check?

We require all volunteers who work with children or vulnerable young people/adults to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service Check. It is a simple process and we will provide you with all the help and support you need to complete it. Please note that there is no fee involved for a DBS certificate.

What is Safeguarding?

Treloar’s is committed to keeping children and young people safe and will stringently follow procedures to endorse their safety. Safeguarding children and vulnerable people is a priority for all employees and volunteers and we will provide you with the appropriate training and information.

Does Treloar’s offer work experience?

We welcome enquiries from students wishing to gain work experience or undertake placements (one week). Please note that we require a minimum age of 14 years to complete work experience placements. For more information please contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator.
