The Maxi Sky Hoists Appeal
Here at Treloar’s, we believe that each child and young person with a disability, no matter how complex, has the right to be independently mobile and access a good quality education wherever possible.
Over the years, we have seen the complexity of our students increase, and today we have found that 99% of our students are reliant on wheelchairs, over half use assisted speech technology to communicate and around a third have little movement of their limbs. Complex disability means that for many of our students, moving from a wheelchair to a new seat, for example, is impossible without assistance. A hoist provides this.
Given our students complexities, hoists are an absolute necessity for safely manoeuvring our students within their classrooms and learning areas and in the residential houses. Hoists are found in all common rooms, physiotherapy rooms and in students’ bedrooms/bathrooms. Having hoists available in each room plays a huge role in unlocking the potential in our current students and enabling them a greater level of independence, choice and comfort.
The Maxi Sky 600 hoists that we use across our site are coming to the end of their working lives and will become obsolete by December 2025. We currently have 151 of these hoists—all of which are in constant daily use. Each new hoist costs £910.
Given that hoists are so essential for our students we have embarked on an urgent programme of replacement and aim to replace 50 hoists in the coming year at a cost of £45,500.
“Having a hoist in class is marvellous, I can now do walking and standing with my friends and not miss out on anything else.” – Treloar College student
“It’s nice to be out of my wheelchair. I had never been hoisted before I got to Treloar’s so it’s nice to not be sitting down all day now. I like getting out of my chair—it’s not good to be in it all day so it’s good to do other stuff.” – Leon, Treloar School student
