Treloar’s 2021 Appeal
Creating an amazing new Outdoor Learning space for our students – Phase One Update!
We are pleased to say that despite some delays during the pandemic the works on the sensory garden and the greenhouse refurbishment for our students wonderful new Outdoor Learning Centre has been completed.
The work on the accessible toilet has also been completed meaning that our students will now have appropriate toileting and changing facilities when they use the Centre. The facilities will be hugely helpful for students enabling them to enjoy even more time in the Centre when they visit.
The greenhouse has undergone a complete refurbishment of the electrical works together with installations of a new heater and sun canopy. This means that the temperature can be better regulated and allow our students to use the greenhouse all year round. A section of the greenhouse is now home to a small animal run and petting area so our students can learn about animal care. The doors to the greenhouse have also been made accessible—they are now electric and will operate by sensors or through the use of a push button. This will allow our students to access the greenhouse without support and provide them with an enhanced level of independence.
Here’s what some of our students and staff have to say about the new Centre:
“It’s amazing – it’s so much better than it was. When it’s raining I can stay outside under the canopy. I really like the garden now, the mirror is my favorite part. I’m looking forward to using the firepit with my friends too.” Student
“Our most complex learners are now better able to engage with an increasing range of outdoor learning opportunities. Outdoor spaces are vital to help those who experience multi-sensory processing difficulties develop their senses and gain and understanding of their place in the world. The new Centre will help students to explore new sensations, experience the weather and engage in new tactile activities. Together this will not only enable a more holistic learning experience but will support overall health and wellbeing.” Teacher
