Design and Technology
Design and Technology is both a popular and valuable subject for students with special educational needs. The curriculum offers students the opportunity to communicate, share and express their individual creativity, independence, resilience, and self-awareness. Knowledge and understanding is drawn from across the curriculum and helps to develop and enable numeracy, literacy and communication skills that can be applied in practical ways. This consolidates skills from other lessons and reinforces learning with positive outcomes. Designing and making usable products gives pupils a real sense of achievement. It also engages students’ natural curiosity to explore existing products, natural shapes, textures and discover through trial and error how things work. The creation of a product improves and enhances the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages and abilities. They benefit from experiencing their own progress and taking responsibility for their own learning. Students are challenged to use all of their senses, hand function skills, and eye-hand coordination skills when completing their tasks. Their personal and collaborative engagement with the task improves attention span, patience, persistence and commitment.
The Design and Technology curriculum is planned and delivered in order to accommodate and challenge learners of all abilities. This is facilitated through individualised staff support and by a clearly demarcated classroom that has specialist and adaptive equipment.
