Computing
At Treloar School, when it comes to technology, we want students to become creators not consumers. Technology is everywhere and will play a pivotal part in students’ lives. Therefore, we model and educate our students on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely. Our curriculum is tailored to the individual needs, access and aptitude of our students. It encompasses computer science, information technology and digital literacy to reflect this. We want our students to understand that there is always a choice with using technology and, as a school, we utilise technology to model positive use. We recognise that the best prevention for a lot of issues we currently see with technology/social media is through education. We recognise the increased vulnerability of our students to exploitation and upskilling students (especially those with independent access) in digital literacy is a core part of our curriculum. These skills will enable them to build discernment and resilience to online threats. This will enable them to use IT safely. They will be able to use IT to maintain and enhance their well-being. They will learn how to deal with issues and how to respond to unwanted approaches.
The collaboration between our computing curriculum and occupational therapists ensures that each student is enabled to be as independent in using a wide range of IT skills as possible, whilst increasing their access to interact with both the wider world and those around them. Students are able to communicate, collaborate, satisfy their curiosity and to develop their independence in a way which was simply impossible before. Building knowledge and skills in this subject will also allow students to effectively demonstrate their learning through creative uses of technology. This will also aid them to become fluent with a range of tools to best express themselves and hope that by the time they leave Treloar’s students have the independence and confidence to choose the best tool to meet their needs in the future.
