Maths – Key Stage 3 Adapted National Curriculum

Aims of Mathematics at Treloar School

To develop a positive attitude towards mathematics
To ensure that children experience success and enjoyment in mathematical activities
To appreciate mathematical patterns and relationships
To develop an ability to use, and apply, mathematical skills and knowledge
To develop appropriate mathematical language
To enable students to tackle a range of practical tasks and real-life problems
To work independently and co-operatively

National Curriculum

The new national curriculum 2014 for mathematics aims to ensure that all students:
become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that students develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down.

When children first move onto the National Curriculum from P levels the aims of the curriculum are:

  • To develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value
  • To spell and read mathematical vocabulary in accordance with the spelling and reading policies
  • These aims develop into:
  • To become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and 4 operations
  • To develop effective written and mental methods
  • To solve a range of problems
  • To develop mathematical reasoning to analyse and describe relationships
  • To know times tables to 12
  • To spell and read mathematical vocabulary in accordance with the spelling and reading policies
  • As children work through the National Curriculum the aims are:
  • To extend understanding of numbers to larger numbers
  • To develop connections
  • To develop the ability to solve a wider range of problems
  • To become fluent in all 4 operations including working with fractions, decimals and percentages
  • To read, spell and pronounce mathematical vocabulary correctly

Eventually the aims are:

  • To build upon previous knowledge and learning
  • To develop connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving
  • To apply knowledge to other subjects through a cross curricular approach
  • To develop fluency from previous learning
  • To reason mathematically
  • To solve problems and evaluate outcomes.

The main curricular areas are Number, Shape, Space and Measures, Handling Data and Using and Applying. These are presented as a variety of practical tasks involving everyday life skills and provide students with independent and group related tasks of an investigative nature. Access to computer software programs and a variety of multi-sensory resources, including Numicon, aid the reinforcement of topics. Key mathematical skills are developed and reinforced across the curriculum and the waking day.

Yearly Assessments are completed using MALT (Mathematics Assessment for Learning and Teaching) test. These form one means of tracking student progress in Maths.
