AAC Awareness month at Treloar’s
October is when we celebrate International AAC Awareness. The aim is to raise awareness of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and to inform people about the many different ways in which people communicate using ACC.
During this month, Emily and Laura from Treloar’s Speech & Language Therapy team have joined college classes to discuss the importance of AAC Awareness month and think about all the different ways that we communicate.
In one of the college class communication sessions, the students were encouraged to share information about their likes and dislikes, to think about their own communication methods and how others communicate.
They have created a poster which shows a lot of different ways of communicating, including signing and several different methods of using AAC. There are around 70% of students at Treloar’s who use some form of AAC, both ‘hi-tech’ and ‘low-tech’.
The theme of AAC Awareness Month this year is Show Your Voice, as shown on the poster that celebrates and promotes having a voice and showing it.
