College awarded Eco-Schools Green Flag
Congratulations to Charlotte Jackson, SEN Tutor and Curriculum Coordinator, and her Eco-Committee on passing Eco-Schools Green Flag!
By the end of the term, we found out that Treloar College was awarded an Eco-Schools Green Flag – an international accreditation that has recognised and rewarded young people’s environmental actions for over 25 years.
Charlotte applied for an Eco-Schools Green Flag to acknowledge, reward and celebrate the ecological achievements of students at Treloar College. It demonstrates that their hard work is appreciated and should encourage and motivate them to continue actively engaging with environmental issues now and throughout their lifetimes.
Eco-Schools reviewed Charlotte’s application and noted the following:
“We love how your tutors were given autonomy to decide how best to run the nomination and selection process for appointing members to your Eco-Committee based on your students’ individual needs. Your minutes are fantastic, and while your students may not have been able to write them, their voice is very much heard.
“It was great to read how your Environmental Review provided an opportunity for your students to explore your site and become better acquainted with the existing eco-initiatives in place. We love how it was also able to raise awareness among your staff body of a range of environmental issues, as well as the brilliant work that your Eco-Committee does.
“Your Action Plan was thorough and incisive, and the goals outlined in it were SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Bound). This is important as it helps to achieve progress and empower your Eco-Committee. We love your ambition in tackling areas where you scored lowest in the Environmental Review. This shows you have a confident Eco-Committee dedicated to maximising their impacts.
“We were really impressed by how creatively and holistically you have embedded environmental topics into a highly individualised curriculum. We were thrilled to read that each Action Plan focus would be taught for a whole term. This is truly inspiring and reflects the immense dedication and commitment of your staff to your pupils’ environmental education. Bravo!
“We were really impressed by how your Eco-Committee have used various means, such as noticeboards, newsletters, assemblies and social media, to promote and involve the whole school and wider local community in your Eco-Schools work. Your Eco-Board is a brilliantly informative resource that does a wonderful job of promoting and celebrating your Eco-Schools work. It’s lovely to see your Eco-Committee members on the board. This is a great way to raise their esteem and encourage the participation of their peers. You’ve clearly looked externally and engaged with different campaigns, people and organisations. Your ongoing collaboration with Action on Plastics and Waste will no doubt yield fantastic tangible results that your students will be able to take immense pride in. Your clear, visual and impactful Eco-Code has clearly been carefully conceived and designed with your students’ diverse and individualised needs in mind. It was an absolute pleasure seeing your students participate in creating your Eco-Code video. We love how you are involving and empowering your students at every opportunity.
“You’ve achieved so much this year, from forging strong community ties to overcoming the challenge of embedding environmental topics into a highly individualised curriculum through a phenomenal multidisciplinary effort. We are sure you must be very proud of how you have engendered in your students a sense of ownership and empowerment through education and community action. Your incredible efforts and the excellent application you have submitted are to be commended and we congratulate you on earning your thoroughly deserved Green Flag with Merit accreditation!”
