Treloar School trip to Calvert Trust

June 25, 2019 / 10:17 am

Earlier this month, we took 8 of our KS4 students on an adventure of a lifetime at the Calvert Trust in Devon.  This award winning centre enables people with physical, learning, behavioural and sensory disabilities to experience exciting, challenging and enjoyable outdoor activities.

The group travelled down on the Treloar Coach and spent the rest of day one getting settled into their new surroundings.  Activities across the rest of the week included abseiling (yes – in a wheelchair!) crate stacking, climbing, canoeing, biking, horse riding, archery and bush craft, including marshmallow toasting.  All these activities were challenging for our students but incredibly fun and rewarding at the same time.

“The experiences our students get from off-site residential trips are second to none” stated Treloar School Tutor Mrs Steele.  “Many families are unable to take their children, with complex needs, away on holiday and so with a purpose built site and a large group of highly specialist Treloar staff we make this possible.  The variety of different activities that they take part in, run by qualified instructors, is possibly a once in a life time chance for some.  From abseiling, climbing and archery to canoeing, horse riding and cycling it opens up a whole new experience.  Furthermore, some of the students that took part in this recent trip are day students and so the experience of staying away from home helps them to build their trust in others, builds their confidence in an unfamiliar environment and to become more independent.  The photographs alone tell a story of how happy they were throughout the week.”

The students had an amazing time:

“I liked the canoeing because it was fun. The food was yummy.  I didn’t want to leave Calvert Trust!” – Isabel

“My favourite activity was the horse riding. I loved listening to the ‘clip clop’ noise their hooves made! I laughed and smiled all the way round!” – Tabitha

“My favourite was disco because fun.” – Jasmine

“Last week was amazing. I went on a very scary swing. I was so excited and nervous!”  – Ella

– Emo

This trip, and others like it, are only possible due to the generosity of our kind supporters.  Your donations make this possible so thank you very much!
